HAIR CARE GUIDE
Taking Care of Your Raw Hair
Raw human hair is not maintenance-free. The way you wash, style, store and handle your hair will have a major effect on how it looks and how long you can continue to use it.
Because raw hair retains its natural characteristics, different textures may require slightly different routines. Always pay attention to how your particular hair responds.
Before Washing
Gently detangle the hair before washing.
Start at the ends and work your way upward toward the roots. Do not pull aggressively through knots or tangles.
If the hair is curly or textured, use your fingers or a wide-tooth comb and work through it gently.
Washing
Wash the hair with a gentle shampoo and follow with a moisturizing conditioner.
Avoid aggressively scrubbing or rubbing the hair together. Instead, allow the water and shampoo to work through the hair while gently smoothing it downward.
Rinse thoroughly.
Conditioning
Conditioning helps maintain softness and manageability.
Apply conditioner through the lengths of the hair, paying particular attention to the ends. For hair that feels dry or has been exposed to frequent heat styling, a deeper conditioning treatment may be helpful.
Drying
Gently squeeze out excess water rather than twisting or wringing the hair.
Allow the hair to air dry whenever possible. If you use heat to dry or style the hair, always use heat protection.
Heat Styling
Raw human hair can be heat styled, but repeated exposure to high temperatures can cause dryness and damage.
We recommend:
- Using a heat protectant
- Keeping temperatures as low as reasonably possible
- Avoiding unnecessary daily heat styling
- Allowing the hair to rest between heat styling sessions
Curly and Textured Hair
Curly and textured hair generally requires more moisture and careful detangling.
Avoid brushing the hair aggressively when it is dry. Use your fingers or a wide-tooth comb and work from the ends upward.
To preserve curls between wears, you can lightly mist the hair with water or a suitable leave-in product and reshape the curls with your fingers.
Sleeping in Your Wig
If you sleep in your wig, protect the hair from friction.
A satin or silk bonnet, scarf or pillowcase can help reduce friction and moisture loss.
For curly or textured hair, loosely preserve the shape before going to bed rather than aggressively brushing it out.
Product Use
Use hair products appropriate for human hair and avoid applying excessive amounts of heavy products.
Too much product buildup can make the hair feel weighed down and can make future washing and styling more difficult.
Detangling
Always detangle gently.
Start at the ends and gradually work toward the roots.
Never force a brush through a severe knot. Doing so can cause unnecessary shedding and breakage.
Storing Your Wig
Before storing your wig:
- Make sure the hair is clean and completely dry.
- Gently detangle it.
- Place the wig on a suitable wig stand or store it in a clean, dry location.
- Protect it from excessive dust, moisture and friction.
Avoid storing a damp wig in an enclosed bag or container.
Colour-Treated Hair
If your hair has been coloured or chemically processed, it may require additional moisture and care.
Colouring can change the condition of human hair, so avoid unnecessary heat and chemical processing after colouring.
If you're considering a major colour transformation, speak with a professional before proceeding.
Lace Care
Handle lace gently.
Avoid excessive pulling around the hairline and be careful when removing adhesive or styling products.
If your lace becomes damaged, don't continue pulling or manipulating the damaged area. Our Wig Revamp Services may be able to repair or restore it depending on the condition.
How to Get the Most Out of Your Hair
There is no guaranteed lifespan for human hair. Longevity depends on how often the hair is worn, how it is installed, washed, styled, coloured and stored.
The best way to extend the life of your hair is simple: be gentle with it and maintain it consistently.
